Racing claims a life!
British IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon died in a 15 car wreck that sent his car into a trackside wall, on Saturday 16th of October. The 33year old, who was in line for £3million if he won the Las Vegas Indy 300, was air lifted to hospital but the doctors couldn’t save him. 3 other drivers were also take to hospital but they weren’t as badly injured.
Witnesses said the track looked like a war zone with a few cars in flames and wreckage spread over the area.
Driver Danica Patrick said ‘There was debris everywhere across the whole track, you could smell the smoke, and you could see the billowing smoke on the back straight from the car. There was a chunk of fire that we were driving around. You could see cars scattered.’
Paul Tracy said ‘Just a horrendous accident. Lots of prayers right now for Dan.’
Rayan Briscoe said ‘I’ll tell you, I’ve never seen anything like it. The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from Terminator or something. I mean there were just pieces of metal and car on fire in the middle of the track, with no car attached to it, and just debris everywhere.’
Wheldon had a successful career that included two wins in the Indianapolis 500, one of them this year. He is the first driver to die in IndyCar since Paul Dana was killed in 2006.
Three-time Formula 1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart said there were ‘probably too many cars on too short a circuit’.
‘Daniel was born to be a racer and died doing what he loved to do. He was a true champion and a gentleman on and off the track.’ Were the kind words from his father.
