poor planet

The Frozen Planet star believes that if the world's temperature continues to rise, there could be dangerous consequences for the human race.
His comments come as world leaders meet in South Africa to try to hammer out a plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
But getting all the countries to agree is proving difficult.
The three most common greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
Scientists think these gases trap heat in the atmosphere, acting like a blanket and causing the planet to become warmer: the 'greenhouse effect'.
As his latest documentary, Frozen Planet, comes to an end, Sir David's seen for himself the effects of climate change in the North and South poles.
He's spent much of his career travelling the world and feels it's extremely important that something's done to protect the planet before it's too late.

Meeting of Ally Kennen!

Some Sidney Stringer students, who are part of Book Club on Thursday lunch times went on a trip to Ernesford Grange Primary School on 21st October 2011 to meet 36 year old book writer, Ally Kennen.

Ally managed to write her first book at the age of 29 in 2005. She is now a famous, inspiring writer to many children around the world.

When students from other schools asked her about her constant inspiration she gets, Ally replied “I grew up with lots of foster children and so I was obviously inspired by my childhood, brothers and sisters.” She also stated “when I was young, I was deeply passionate about books.”

Ally grew up on a farm and the way she described when she is writing a book is by ‘writing simple plans’ and that ‘ghosts come into my head, gives names and characters’.

Ally Kennen also studied Archaeology and history at Birmingham University. Her first book, Beast, was created during an MA in creative Writing at Bath Spa University.

The few questions that were asked by many young students were as follows:

  • What’s your favourite part of writing a book?
Here Ally replied – “When the Editor says ‘right Ally we need a new book.’”

She said “It’s like arriving on a completely different landscape.”

  • What book did you enjoy writing the most?

She stated ‘the book that I enjoyed writing the most, was ‘Beast’.”

Ally Kennen is an enthusaiastic, captivating writer. She mentioned that the first time she heard one of her books was going to be published she ‘lay on the floor and hyperventilated.” She has still kept her diary from when she was a 7 year old child, still containing many of the stories she came up with at that age.

During the trip, before the students got time to ask the young writer any questions they had, she made it a sort of challenge amongst the group of kids that ‘whomever asked the most intriguing , most brilliant question may get my new book; signed and get a picture taken with me.’

But amongst all the students competing for this moment of fame, a Sidney Stringers pupil manages to steal away all the praise from the writer, herself, Ally Kennen. Liam Kelly, a Lanchester student in Sidney Stringer Academy asked the writer ‘Why did you choose to add plot elements, such as the wasp or Judges list, and then not follow them up?’ He won the challenge.

Liam Kelly got his signed book, ‘Bedlam’, and photograph taken with the writer, along with other students of Sidney Stringer that attended on the trip.

At the end of the day, everyone had a great and enjoyable time and all schools got a signed poster for their school library along with signed Ally Kennen books.

Visit To Transport

On Thursday 10 November 2011 at 3:30 the BBC News Reporter went to the transport museum and found some great facts.

The facts we found were really interesting and I am going to now share them.

Here is one of them which is called The Phoenix
In 1948 Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) opened a new city square in Broadgate. This was the symbolic beginning of Coventry reconstruction. The city chose as its symbol a phoenix rising from the ashes.
Broadgate c1910
Broadgate 1953

Another one is called Standard vanguard phase II

In February 1954 Standard became the first British car maker to offer a diesel engine as a factory fitted option. The chassis was stiffened to take the weight of the heavier engine and performance suffered with 65 mph (105 km/h) about the top speed. Like the petrol engines, the diesel was a Standard-built "20C" engine developed for the Ferguson tractor. Whilst diesels fitted to the tractor were restricted to 2200 rpm and developed 25 horsepower (19 kW), road-going engines in Vanguards had no limiter and so produced 60 horsepower (45 kW) at 3800 rpm. However, they retained the tractor's "Ki-Gass", de-compressor and over-fuelling systems, all of which had to be manually operated when starting the engine from cold. 1973 diesel Vanguards were made.

And this is all from Monazzam Khan,

Than you

Pool Fight

Pool Fight???

On Thursday 10 November 2011 at 3:30 their was a gang fight with teenagers included in Coventry town centre right next to the transport museum and across the old fire station.

At the scene we saw people with bats and beer bottles. Their were approximately 10 people included in both gangs. They were about to hit each other until one of the staff of our school had called the police and had put an end to the scene as soon as possible.

That one call had saved the day!!!
We heard many swears at the scene and many foul language being used and as the police approached the teenagers had fled and thrown some bottles in a bush and were running with some which we never knew where they were.

The police had come in 6 cars surrounding the area and speaking to the eye witnesses. The people which had witnesses were 5 boys in Miss Benson's class 1 girl in Miss Benson's class and 2 news reporter's from Mr Aires class. We also had seen an undercover cop on the old fire station rooftop looking down at the situation. Their were many weapons involved such as steel poles, base ball bats and many more...

When we interviewed Miss Benson she said ''I had called the police to save my fellow class students from getting in danger and I was shocked at that moment''

After we found one of the beer bottle across Swanswell park laying on the concrete.

At 4:22 their were 5 police men standing outside the museum investigating.

And this was all from Monazzam Khan,
Thank you

Ever heard of a flying fish?

Flying fish are what scientifically known as Exocoetidaes and are mainly found in the world’s tropical and sub tropical oceans. They are coated blue and have large fins that are similarto wings. Flying fish are mostunique for their defense mechanism for when escaping predators in the ocean. They have found that the best way to avoid other fish in the water is to get out of the water itself.

This is what a Flying fish looks like.

By using their large pectoral fins (wings); they are able to take short gliding flights through the air, above the water and around 50cm. Flying fish are occasionally beating the surface of the water with its tail fin (caudal fin) in long their flights. Their main diet is Omnivore & they grow up to 18 in (45 cm).

Some flying fish are able to reach an approximate speed of 30km/hour (20mph). The recorded time for maximum airborne was 45 seconds, filmed by a NHK TV crew near Yakushima,Island, which is the Southern tip of Japan in May 2008.

111-year-old Christmas pud found in back of a cupboard

A 111-year-old Christmas pudding found in the back of a cupboard in Dorset is believed to be the world's oldest.

The limited edition tinned treat was one of only 1,000 sent to Royal Navy personnel in 1899.

The woman who uncovered it at her home said the tinned "Peek, Frean & Co's Teetotal Plum Pudding" had been in her late husband's family for years.

It's thought to have been ordered by Agnes "Aggie" Weston, who was famously kind to sailors during the Boer War.

The pudding's decorative tin carries the message: "For the Naval Brigade, In the Front, With Miss Weston's Best Christmas & New Year, 1900, Wishes."

The family who owned the pudding have now donated it to the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

The museum's collections manager, Victoria Ingles, said: "It is quite remarkable that the pudding has survived for over 100 years.

"It is the only example we know of issued to the Naval Brigade still in existence and quite possibly the oldest surviving Christmas pudding, too," she said.

Race begins to clean up the city for Olympics

Dedicated volunteers have been paving the way to clean up Coventry in the run-up to next year's Olympics.

A strong team of 2o people spent a morning litter picking outside Canley Community Centre in Prior Deram Walk, is part of the council's Proud of My City campaign to sweep up and tidy the streets of Coventry.

They successfully managed to collect 15 bags of litter in just half an hour from outside the centre and along the Canley Brook.

It was organised by the Canley Community Centre and the city council's Neighbourhood Action team and included PCSO's, youth worker and residents from the area.

Communities have now been encouraged to do their bit for the Olympics when Coventry's Ricoh Arena, renamed the Coventry City Stadium for the games, will host several football matches.

The campaign aims to foster civic pride and celebrate everything good about the city of Coventry.

Those who went beyond the call of duty will be nominated for a Proud of My City citizens award, and will be presented by the Lord Mayor of Coevntry, Coun Keiran Mulhall.

From the council's Neighbourhood Action team, Richard Middleton, helped bring together a group of volunteers to take part in the litter-pick.

He said: "Everyone was really keen to get on board and I noticed quite a lot of people around in the area. It sends out a quite clear message to the people how giving even a small amount of time can make a difference to where you live.

"It was surprising just how much rubbish we collected. A lot of the litter was gathered in bushes and hedges. This was a taster of bigger things to come. I hope it has put a thought into people's minds to think of how we can make our city a better place."

Now more people are being encouraged to work with police and public services to tackle graffiti and fly-tipping or volunteer to clear up their streets.

If you would like more information about how to get involved with the activities, please log onto this website: www.proudofmycity.org.uk

Rising food prices leads to crisis!

A new report by Oxfam claims spiralling food prices are making poorer families in Coventry cripple and hard to cope.

The report shows that 14 percent of below-average-income parents are now being forced to skip meals on a regular basis so that other members of their family are able to have enough to eat.

The charity has been able to poll over 1,500 people living in the government's Households Below Average Income bracket- even including those that are using Coventry Foodbank- and have found that they are still being hit hard as food prices continue to increase by the day.

Nearly half those people that were surveyed are living on a weekly food budget of less than £60, with only 11% on less than £40-a-week and only 6% on less than £30.

Midlands campaigner, Gurvinder Sidhu said: "Because so many people are living on precariously low incomes, managing household budgets is pretty much like a daily tight-rope walk.

"Trying to balance the spiralling costs of food and fuel means that anything else people need to budget for-like paying for their child to go on a school trip or fixing a broken washing machine-are simply out of the question."

"It's an outrage that increasing numbers of people are having to visit charity foodbanks in order to feed themselves or put a hot meal on table for their children."

The start of the operation(Coventry Foodbank) began in January and has now fed over 3,500 people in the last 1o months, being able to supply food for 200 families at its peak.

The DJ T

Who's DJ T? 3 lucky BBC reporters had the chance of meeting DJ T in Hillz FM Studio to interview her and the replies were shocking. This event took place on Thursday 13 October 2011 at 3:30 to 4:00.

The question we asked were 'if you got to go to your childhood would you go or stay in your present' and she said her present because of her experience also we ask her of how her childhood was and she said it was different to anyone else.

Also there were many equipment put in the studio and many software which would make the music more pumping up and partier and would add on more effects too.

We had heard of many funny nicknames as for example the receptionist name was brown-sugar and many other one's too.

We had alot of fun and were mostly confident and comfortable and when the interview was over one of our reporters was sweating in happiness.

And this was all it from Monazzam Khan,
Thank You.

How did Gadhafi die?

Interim Prime Minsiter Mahmoud Jibril said ‘Longtime Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi has been killed this Thursday’.

The confirmation of Gadhafi’s dead came after countless hours of conflicting reports about the former leaders status.

But how exactly did Gadhafi die?

Along with the news of the death of Gadhafi it was reported that his son, Mutassim, along with his chief of intelligence, Abdullah al-Senussi, were also found killed, according to Anees al-Sharif a spokesman for the Tripoli military council.

Revolutionary fighters attacked the house of Gadhafi, where he was found to be hiding, Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam told CNN News. ‘Gadhafi was shot while trying to flee.’

Gadhafi capture an 'opportunity' for N

A cell phone video was aired on Al-Jazeera Arabic news, which showed Gadhafi was wounded to his head (shot). However Agence France Presse, a news agency; distributed a cell phone photograph, which also appeared to show that Gadhafi was severely wounded. CNN, in any case was not able to independently verify the images authenticity.

Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam told CNN. "Colonel Gadhafi is history.”

Us Declaration of Independence. legal?

July 4ht, Americas founding fathers signed a document that announced their sovereign nation ‘ The Declaration of Independence.’

Description: rawing of the John Adams, Gouverneur Morris, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson
An event, Temple American Inn of Court, turned British lawyers against American to find out if the declaration was legal.

A vote at the end of the meeting decided that they wouldn’t decide anything now but they would wait.

‘The legality of the declaration is proven by subsequent independence movements, which have been formed by world opinion. However the Brits disagree. They believe that was illegal.  The Declaration of Independence itself, in the absence of any recognised legal basis, had to appeal to "natural law", an undefined concept, and to "self-evident truths", that is to say truths for which no evidence could be provided.
The grievances listed in the Declaration were too trivial to justify secession. The main one - no taxation without representation - was no more than a wish on the part of the colonists, to avoid paying for the expense of protecting them against the French during seven years of arduous war and conflict.’ This is a quote from the BBC news page.

kate middleton and prince william huge fan of downtown abby

The 22-year-old actress, who plays Lady Sybil Crawley, met the Duke and Duchess of Cambrdige at a Bafta event in LA where they told her they are 'huge fans of the show'.

Findlay said of the royal meeting: 'I was flattered and privileged to be presented to the two of them.

'They picked me out and spoke very highly of Downton Abbey, and it was lovely to hear. They told me that they were huge fans of the show.'

The actress added that she was in awe of Kate and described her as 'beautiful, lovely and very kind'.

Findlay added to OK! magazine: 'It wasn't exactly all in a day's work for me but it was for them, I'm sure.

'It felt surreal as an actress playing English aristocracy to meet them in LA. And as I am scared of flying it was already strange enough to be so far away, so I said to them 'Can't we do this again in the UK?' It was wonderful.'

The Downton actress spent most of the evening in awe of A-list celebrities it seems, later meeting Tom Hanks and saying: 'I get very starstruck and I couldn't stop looking at Tom Hanks when I met him. He must have thought I was nuts.'

Racing claims a life!
British IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon died in a 15 car wreck that sent his car into a trackside wall, on Saturday 16th of October. The 33year old, who was in line for £3million if he won the Las Vegas Indy 300, was air lifted to hospital but the doctors couldn’t save him. 3 other drivers were also take to hospital but they weren’t as badly injured.
Witnesses said the track looked like a war zone with a few cars in flames and wreckage spread over the area.
Driver Danica Patrick said ‘There was debris everywhere across the whole track, you could smell the smoke, and you could see the billowing smoke on the back straight from the car. There was a chunk of fire that we were driving around. You could see cars scattered.’
Paul Tracy said ‘Just a horrendous accident. Lots of prayers right now for Dan.’
Rayan Briscoe said ‘I’ll tell you, I’ve never seen anything like it. The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from Terminator or something. I mean there were just pieces of metal and car on fire in the middle of the track, with no car attached to it, and just debris everywhere.’
Wheldon had a successful career that included two wins in the Indianapolis 500, one of them this year. He is the first driver to die in IndyCar since Paul Dana was killed in 2006.
Three-time Formula 1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart said there were ‘probably too many cars on too short a circuit’.
‘Daniel was born to be a racer and died doing what he loved to do. He was a true champion and a gentleman on and off the track.’ Were the kind words from his father.

Boy begs in Britain

Panaroma's John Sweeney manages to trace down a young boy, who begs on the streets of London to his family's home town in Romania.

He confronted his family and relatives about why they allow a little young boy to beg on the streets of London, when they seem to have everything. Yes, he reported the relatives drive a BMW and own 2 homes, even including their own luxury villa. He wanted to ask the famliy why that young boy spends many hours begging in Britain when they seem to be doing just fine in Romania?

A female member of the family made this difficul for Sweeney when she threatened him: 'Go away or i'll smash your head in' was what she said many times to the reporters and to Sweeney himself. Reluctant to get his answers, Sweeney did not give in and asked many times the questions that were on his mind. The woman answered: 'tell him i'm going to beat him up!' She did not answer any of Sweeney's questions and he later on retreated; leaving John Sweeney still wondering whether if that young boy was still begging in Britain.

T-Rex dinosaur was even more massive than we thought

The mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex may have been much bigger and hungrier than people thought, say experts.

Scientists in England and the USA have used 3D scans to measure the size of T-Rex skeletons and found they were far bigger than people had thought.

They found that T-Rex would've weighed about 10kg when it was born, about the same as a 6-month old human baby.

But then over the next 17 years it would boom in size up to nine tonnes, about as heavy as nine small cars.

That's about twice as heavy as experts had thought up to now.

The old way to figure out dinosaur sizes was to build scale models, but now the 3D laser scans have made the measurements far more accurate.

Large adult T rex image next to smaller young T-rex and even smaller human New 3D images show old and young T-Rexes next to a human.

Because the T-Rex skulls were so huge, the team had to borrow special scanners normally used by Chicago Police and the Ford Motor Company in America.

Dr John Hutchinson of the Royal Veterinary College told us that T-Rexes "would have been extremely hungry, like ravenous teenagers".

He said he now wants to find even more fossils to prove that T-Rex was even bigger and heavier than nine tonnes.

X Factor: Amelia Lily heartbroken at being dropped

X Factor: Amelia Lily heartbroken at being dropped

X Factor reject Amelia Lily has described the twist that saw her and three other contestants eliminated at the weekend as "unfair and cruel".

Each of the judges had to pick one of their acts to leave and Kelly Rowland picked 16-year-old Amelia.

Amelia said: "It is literally the hardest thing you could possibly ever go through in your life.

"It is like having your heart ripped out."

But despite being gutted by her mentor's decision, Amelia said she doesn't blame the former Destiny's Child singer - especially as Kelly's promised to help Amelia with her music career.

"She said to me: 'I'm still your mentor, Amelia, even if you're not in the competition any more, you ring me, you text me, you email me whenever you want for advice and I'll always be here', and I really appreciate that from her."

Amelia is now planning on writing and recording her own songs, and even said Kelly had suggested there were already people in the music industry who want to work with her.

Amelia was dropped from the show at the weekend after her performance of Michael Jackson's Billy Jean. The other acts to be booted off were 2 Shoes, Jonjo Kerr and James Michael.

poo

Traces of poo found on millions of mobile phones in UK

Do you always wash your hands after going to the loo? Well if you don't, you might start to after reading this!

New research has found that one in every six mobile phones has dangerous bacteria that comes from poo on them.

Experts said the most likely reason why so many phones have this potentially harmful bacteria on, are because people don't wash their hands properly.

The dirtiest phones were found in Glasgow, with London and Birmingham also scoring badly.

The study showed that although most people said they wash their hands properly, nine out of ten phones had some kind of bacteria on them.

The most worrying finding was that 16% of phones had a strand of E. coli bacteria on them.

E. coli bacteria E. coli is a potentially harmful bacteria that can survive on hands and surfaces for hours

This particular bacteria comes from poo and can cause stomach upsets, sickness and diarrhoea.

Dr Val Curtis, who was one of the team behind the study, said: "This research provides more evidence that some people still don't wash their hands properly, especially after going to the toilet."
